President's Message

The President's Message for March 2024 highlights the importance of sustainability in Rotary projects, particularly focusing on water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives. It reflects on past projects and emphasizes the need for better assessment methods to ensure lasting impact. The message underscores the role of RAGCED in supporting Rotarians in assessing project sustainability and advocates for community involvement to promote ownership and longevity of projects.

Dear RAGCED Members,

March marks a significant period for Rotarians as we focus our efforts on the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Area of Focus. While WASHRAG spearheads initiatives in this domain, RAGCED also plays a crucial role, particularly in ensuring sustainability.

Sustainability lies at the heart of our endeavors. Regrettably, we have witnessed the remnants of past Rotary Foundation projects that lacked this crucial element. As stewards of change, it's imperative that we prioritize sustainability in all our undertakings.

Leadership across the Rotary Foundation acknowledges the imperative for improved sustainability assessment. This includes comprehensive Community Needs Assessments, which are instrumental in determining the genuine needs of recipient communities and their capacity for sustaining projects.

One of the cornerstones of sustainable projects is ensuring that beneficiaries have a vested interest. By encouraging community investment, we foster a sense of ownership that is vital for project longevity and success.

In discussions at various Rotary forums, let us advocate for the principle of "skin in the game." Even in resource-constrained environments, communities can contribute to essential services, mirroring their ability to afford mobile phones.

RAGCED stands committed to supporting Rotarians in their quest for sustainable solutions. Through collaborative efforts and knowledge-sharing, we can integrate economic sustainability into every Rotary project, ensuring a lasting impact on the communities we serve.

Let us embrace this opportunity to empower communities worldwide and champion sustainable development. Together, we can build a brighter future for all.

Warm regards,

Carl W. Treleaven PDG
